CritiCalorie's Top Diet Pill Pick
Do we ever rate a diet pill positively?. Yes (rarely). Why aren't we recommending Calotren? We're looking for clinically-researched ingredients, at the right (that means clinical) dosage. There are a few diet pills that have chosen this better route, and our favorite is Boda Extract No. 3. You can read our review or go to the official site.
Calotren Review
The other day I heard a radio advertisement for Calotren. I don’t remember the specifics of the ad, but did want to make sure I reviewed it. Diet pills are, in many ways, like a plague (at least those that don’t work). There’s a new one at least every day with a new twist. We’ll see what Calotren has to offer.
Who Makes Calotren?
Calotren is made by Top of the World Distributors (TOTWD). They make a wide variety of products, everything from EFAs, to skin care to sexual enhancers. Their “About” page is actually just a page explaining their shipping policy and the fact that they won’t accept refunds if you don’t like the taste of their products or if you aren’t satisfied with the results. So, from the get-go we know these guys don’t offer a moneyback guarantee (guarantees aren’t uncommon in the diet pill industry, so it’s surprising that TOTWD isn’t up with the times on this, a few products that come to mind whose guarantees I’ve tested: Fenphedra and Lipovox. A few guarantees that I’ve found questionable: Nuphedrine and Miracleburn, mainly because of the autoship garbage they force on you).
One more slap in the face: If they do accept your return, they’re going to take 2-3 weeks to process it so you can see it back on your credit/debit card. Nice.

It looks like TOTWD was originally chartered in July of 1998 with the registered address being the one listed above. However, something rather alarming: the entity was dissolved in April of 2000 for reasons not specified.
So the distributors of Calotren are operating under a business name that is no longer active? Why?
TOTWD is quick to point out that they’re approved by the BBB. It’s unfortunate that the approval was from 2003 and they’re still showing the BBB trust symbol to prove it.
Enough about TOTWD. So far I’m thoroughly unimpressed. Let’s move on to Calotren specifically.
What is Calotren?
Directly from their site1
CALOTREN is an all-natural Protein Formula working as a nutritional supplement that assists the body in shedding excess body fat and toxins naturally. CALOTREN does not stimulate, starve or trick your body into weight loss. It simply supports the body’s lean muscle tissue and fuels the body’s natural mechanism in burning off excess fats and sugars more efficiently. For those who are underweight or in good physical condition, CALOTREN encourages stamina and energy.
With this paragraph, they’re trying to imply that stimulating the body for weight loss doesn’t work. It actually does. Green tea, caffeine, and synephrine all have scientific studies backing their efficacy at increasing your metabolic rate and helping you burn more fat than you otherwise would be able to. Do stimulants sometimes make you jittery? For some yes. For others they don’t notice any side effects whatsoever. My only point is that stimulants work.
But what’s with this protein formula that Calotren has that will “simply support the body’s lean muscle tissue and fuels the body’s natural mechanism in burning off excess fats and sugars more efficiently”?
Calotren is basically a collagen supplement. Collagen has been hawked as a weight loss supplement for over 25 years. The idea is that the protein promotes lean muscle mass, which burns fats (this is true, muscle does have a higher caloric maintenance requirement than fat). There is absolutely no scientific research available to back this claim.
Lose Weight with Calotren — Starve Yourself!
The rule with Calotren is that you take it before going to bed. The kicker is that you need to make sure you don’t eat three hours prior to going to bed. Everyone knows that eating smaller, frequent meals promotes a speedier metabolism, so a three-hour starvation window is actually counterproductive and will slow your metabolism.
On top of the starving-before-bed thing, it’s important to note that Calotren contains aloe vera. Aloe vera is a great supplement when applied topically to soothe sunburns — when ingested, it acts as a laxative. So not only will you be starving, but you’ll also run through your food much too quickly, not getting all the required nutrients.
That’s their trick I suppose — starvation and laxatives.
Calotren Overall Conclusion
Calotren will not work. There are no scientific studies available (if there were, you’d be certain that TOTWD would make them known) showing any evidence that collagen supplementation leads to weight loss. The background on TOTWD is disconcerting. The fact that no moneyback guarantee is offered is a tell-tale sign that they deal with plenty of unsatisfied customers that want their moneyback because Calotren did nothing for them. Stay away!
